Shopify is redesigning its admin to be simpler and more AI-first. Merchants do not need to change anything in their stores. The new layout moves Sidekick, Shopify's built-in AI assistant, to the middle of the screen, a sign that more store tasks will begin with a typed request to AI.

- What changed: On September 24, Shopify's @katarinabatina announced that the admin "has a new look," with easier navigation across key workflows and Sidekick front and center (post). It is the most viewed post on the redesign, at 238,000 views and nearly 1,700 engagements.
- How the redesign was done: @MSchwaibold, from Shopify's design team, says the team spent months on old screens removing complexity, layers, colors, strokes and shadows, and untangling years of design decisions (post). Designer @kevinclark shared screens of the new design language, drawing 1,931 engagements, and wrote that it is starting to roll out now (screens, rollout).
- Why it points to AI: @MSchwaibold describes the same project as building AI-first interaction patterns through Sidekick to help people get work done faster (post). Merchants are asking for this too: @jazzyslide, who heads an agency group in Japan, wishes CSV uploads would give way to AI Toolkit and Sidekick (post).
- The wider pattern: Earlier in September, @masahirochaen highlighted a Shopify example where one prompt in Claude Code sets up a shopping agent for a store, wired through to cart and Shop Pay checkout (post).
- What to do this week: When the new admin reaches your store, spend 15 minutes finding your daily workflows (orders, products, discounts) in the new navigation. Then give Sidekick one routine task you normally do by hand and check its result before applying anything.
Do I need to do anything when the new admin arrives?
No setup is required. The redesign only changes how the admin looks and how you move around it, and your storefront and checkout stay the same. Shopify has not published a public changelog listing every change or a rollout date for all stores, so expect it to appear gradually.
What does putting Sidekick in the middle mean for how I run my store?
Shopify expects more work to begin as a request to AI, with fewer clicks through menus. Its own design team describes the project as pairing a cleaner interface with AI-first patterns through Sidekick. There is no public data yet on which new Sidekick features ship with the redesign or how many merchants use it, so test it on low-risk tasks first.
Does a simpler admin affect my customers?
Only indirectly. Shoppers never see the admin, since it is your back office. The same design logic still applies to your product pages: each element should earn its place, and clutter makes the important things harder to find.
