The new admin is a design and navigation change, not a new sales feature. It reaches stores gradually with no setup, and Shopify says it kept the muscle memory merchants rely on. App extensions restyle automatically; apps with their own embedded interface keep the old look until they adopt Polaris 2.0.

  • What changed: Shopify's changelog lists new colours, typography, spacing and icons. Search, notifications and the store picker move into the side navigation, which collapses for more room, and Sidekick moves from a side panel to a floating chat at the bottom of the page. The rollout started on September 15, 2026 and "will arrive to your admin on its own," so merchants do not need to do anything.
  • Why it is getting attention now: Shopify brought renewed attention to the rollout this week as its design team shared more detail on how the admin was redesigned (@katarinabatina, @kevinclark). The change also puts Sidekick in a much more persistent position across the admin, following a 4.8x year-over-year increase in daily Sidekick sessions reported by Shopify.
  • App builders are already trimming: @junaidkbr retired the admin sidebar toggle in his app Alfred because the new admin "now has one built in (⌘B), and it's better than ours was." @denniscessan posted a first draft of his Checkout Links dashboard in the new style. Not every reaction is positive: @junaidkbr also criticised "the poor UI + UX this new dashboard introduced."
  • What apps must do: Shopify's developer changelog says Admin UI extensions and App Home UI extensions pick up the new styles automatically. Apps that render their own App Home interface keep their current styles until they choose to move to Polaris 2.0, whose release candidate arrived on September 24, 2026, so merchants never see a half-updated app. Built for Shopify apps have until May 1, 2027 to update their embedded App Home interface to match the admin's visual style; Shopify's changelogs set no deadline for other apps.
  • What to do this week: App teams can test the Polaris 2.0 release candidate in a store that has the new admin, in one with the previous design, and outside the admin, as Shopify's changelog recommends. Shopify now lets developers create a dev store with the "Shopify admin's new design" feature preview, an option it added after developers asked for a way to test. Then list any UI that duplicates what the admin now does natively, and start with the Page, Section and Button components Shopify recommends.

Has the new admin reached my store yet?

Maybe not. Shopify says the rollout began on September 15, 2026 and reaches merchants progressively, with no setup needed. It has not published a store-by-store schedule, and the changelog does not mention a way to opt in or out.

Will merchants expect Sidekick to work with my app?

That is an open question. @junaidkbr raised it directly, asking whether merchants will "expect that Sidekick works with every app" now that it sits on every page. None of the Shopify announcements on the redesign describe new Sidekick integration for third-party apps, so there is no public answer yet.
