It's been a huge week for ecommerce, almost entirely dominated by one theme: agentic commerce: AI agents that shop and check out on a customer's behalf. Here's a rundown of the biggest stories from X, Shopify.dev and the ecommerce press.
🔥 The big story: agentic commerce just got real
This one theme made up 78% of all AI-ecommerce chatter on X this week, with announcements coming one after another:
1. Shopify officially partners with Muse (Meta) on agentic checkout On Sep 21, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announced a deep partnership with Muse to bring agentic checkout powered by Shop Pay to every Shopify store. In plain terms: Muse's AI agent can now find products and check out on a shopper's behalf, right inside the Shopify ecosystem.
"We are excited to announce we are partnering deeply with Muse to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores..." — @tobi
Mark Zuckerberg backed it up himself: "Teaming up with Shopify to make shopping and checkout easier in Muse... More partnerships like this coming soon." (@finkd)
Shopify's own account said merchants were live on Muse from day one. When someone shops with Muse, "it searches Shopify Catalog to find the best match", and checkout happens inside the app (@Shopify).

2. Meta and Stripe are in on it too Right after that, Stripe announced it's partnering with Meta so merchants can actually accept payments from AI agents through the Muse Connector Platform.
"@Meta and @stripe are partnering to make it easy for businesses to accept agentic payments using the @Muse Connector Platform." — @patrickc
3. Wall Street is already putting a number on it Oppenheimer estimates Muse (Meta) could hit $28B in AI agent revenue by 2027, with agentic AI operating margins as high as 80%, according to analysis from @StockSavvyShay.
4. The wildest experiment of the week: letting an AI agent run a real business Riley Walz (known for scrappy hacking projects) shared a new research project: they set up a handful of real online businesses (each with its own bank account, debit card, email and domain), then handed the entire operation over to an AI agent to see if it could actually sell things.
"We set up a handful of small online businesses, and put an agent in charge." — @rtwlz
📌 Why this matters for sellers: agentic commerce isn't a far-off concept anymore. Shopify, Meta and Stripe are building the actual infrastructure for it this quarter. Your product pages and landing pages will soon need to work just as well for AI agents as they do for humans.
🛠️ Shopify platform news
- Tailwind joins Shopify: Adam Wathan (creator of Tailwind CSS) announced Tailwind is officially joining the Shopify team. The post pulled in nearly 20,000 engagements, the single biggest ecommerce post on X this week. @adamwathan

- New bundle size limits for UI extensions: UI extensions on API version 2025-10 or later are capped at 64KB of compressed JS (full-page customer account extensions get up to 128KB), and to stay deployable after Oct 1, 2026, every existing UI extension must move to API version 2026-01 or later. Apps over the limit can apply for an exception. This mostly affects developers and app builders; store owners without custom extensions can ignore it. shopify.dev
- Tobi Lütke on "AI slop grenades": Per Fortune/Business Insider, Shopify's CEO admitted employees using AI are sometimes producing low-quality output that just creates more cleanup work for everyone else. It is a candid take on the downside of moving too fast on internal AI adoption. (Fortune, via Hacker News)
📊 CRO & UX: Baymard's biggest research drop of the year
Baymard Institute has published a run of new UX benchmarks in recent weeks: B2B Medical & Pharma, Telco, ISP, Food Delivery, Insurance, Accounts & Self-Service, plus a Quantitative Insights report rounding up broader online shopping behavior. Great reference data if you're optimizing UX for a specific niche. feeds.baymard.com
On X, practical CRO tips also got a lot of attention:
- Switching from a 3-step checkout to a 1-step checkout, plus turning on Accelerated Checkout (Shop Pay), was claimed to lift conversion by 7.5–20% in a couple of clicks. @alexpagepilot
- Shopify added AI Autocomplete to search, which the author claims makes store search more powerful than Amazon's. @bradkowalk
On the press side, worth a read: a deep dive on the cart page, the most neglected page in ecommerce, and a case study on how to measure real customer LTV, from the founder of $200M-revenue brand Quad Lock. Add To Cart podcast
Two takeaways for sellers this week:
- Agentic commerce is moving from "concept" to real infrastructure (Shopify x Muse, Meta x Stripe). Sooner or later, your PDPs and landing pages will need to work for AI agents, not just humans.
- The classic pain points (checkout UX and cart page friction) are still very real. Don't chase AI hype while neglecting the basics.
See you next week for another roundup! 🚀
